whats the best cam people have used on the street with there 186 / 202, im lookin for a big lumpy cam for my 186, but dont want it too big for the street as i want to be able to drive comfortably. something like an 'xu1'spec cam from the lc, but there fairly basic, and i want it to be loud and have heeps of lump. so please share what you have, or have had from experience.

Cheers Blake

http://www.tighecams.com.au/cars.htm

the 150A and 392C are both magic camshafts, nice lump, good power but the 150A isnt that much of a pig.

For good street driving try a 186S cam and when you want it to sound lumpy just pull the choke out abit.Posted Image

A wade 1147CB cam is what I had in my 202...warm street application, it was driven daily, great street cam IMO, great idle and note, and drivability aint bad too.

INT 224 Dur@0.050" 0.4545" Valve lift
EX 232 Dur@0.050" 0.474" Valve lift

sounds like this....

thanks to people who shared there thoughts. im thinking of going with a camtech, they seem to have there act together with there technology, and customer support. who else has had experience with camtech cams, or the cheap cams from ebay?

cheers Blake

I run a Crow 33/73 (part no. 667 I think) in my street driven 202 LH.
It's ok, idles well with a bit of a lump in it, performance is notably better than stock, you can tell when it "comes on cam" and drivability is fine with a 5 speed box.
In all honesty, I'd prefer a bigger one. I reckon a 40/80 would be a good thing, if not slightly bigger again.
Just make sure your bottom end will handle at least 7000rpm.

Incorrect as Heatseeker do the HS60 hydraulic still and it is a stage 6 plus Peter still grinds custom cams to suit what ever info you give him.

I had a cam from Redlands Engine reconditioners years ago ( now closed), dunno the lobe sizes or separation, but it was a R 94, a modified copy of a Crow. It was developed for limited six sprint speedway. Torque range was 3200-7800, although I only maxed it at 6800 occasionally. 9 port benched to 320hp, triple 175's, 7/16 studs, rollers, 221 crank, zero deck height. It idled at 550 & sounded awesome through open pipes. It was a manual & had great power from idle...wish I had never parted with it

Look up Waggot Cams or engineering.
Thinking they are somewhere on the NSW north coast now.
There old 30/70 cam was the ducks guts for daily drivers.
Reckon they forgotten more about red 6s than most these days know.

sorry to jack the thread but while where on the subject anyone no the best cam for 186/stroker 221 crank, As far as i kno there not good for high revs so anything revn over 6 is no good. Place i spoke to about puttin motor back together recommended crow xu1 cam but ive heard a few bad things about them plus wots the point of having a cam in there thats needs to rev more than me motor can handle??

you could put a boat cam in it that would pull hard as down low for the 221 stroker the cam would prob run out at 5000 tho but should still go good

more cubes will put the rev range lower on the stroker than it would on a 202 or 186.
so the rpm range will be lower than all the listings for cams that are for a 202.

Which ever cam manufacturer that you decide on, talk to them explain what you want from the vehicle(be honest)& what the engine specs are. Don't get a particular cam because someone else say's it was ok for them, because they may have eg. 12:1 compression & you may have 9.5, so the engine may be a dog to drive. Personally I never had much luck with Crow(they seem to pick the cam from the book, not from my info)Bert Jones,Watson cams, COME & Camtech(talk to Malcolm) I've had great success with.

Hi Trevor

My experience with Strokers is limited But I do know a bit about the 235 version. It is true they don’t like big revs. 5800 would the limit. But what they lack in high rpm HP they make up with in the way of torque. Crow aren’t that bad. A bad batch of cores can haunt any cam manufacturer. I would pick a cam with 6000rpm limit in mind. You also want a fairly wide lobe separation. This spreads the power band wide to make use of the torque offered by the extra cubes. I’d use a crow 35667 cam. We have installed this cam in a 186 daily driver with one of our new SIM002 EFI Intakes. It idles well and makes power between 2500-6000. The 100 lobe separation and the high lift both help improve the cylinder filling. Cylinder filling in emphasised with the extra cubes you have. A 72 XU1 cam only has a rev range of 2500-5800, but because it relies on duration rather than lift to fill the cylinders I feel the 35667 will offer better performance in your application. I hope this info helps

this is info i got from a fella who makes main stud girdles, anyone no of a really really good holden 6 engine builder in adelaide?
