I've been avoiding swapmeets for a while now.

They empty my pockets and fill my shed.

But today, I relented and went to Gosford swap with a mate.

Just for the social aspect....catching up.....talking shit....eating a sausage sanga....

I really shouldn't have taken any money with me. I will never learn.

I came home with a set of 13x7 US racers with tyres, a triple SU manifold,

a couple of old Nasco steering column locks and a box full of disassembled 1 3/4 SUs.

None of which I need.....Came home with $1.70.

Feel free to relate your swapmeet tales....

ONe i always attend, the Rocky swap, third biggest swap meet in QLD, and hosted by my car club.

I generally volunteer and do the parts pickup thing, spend a few hours sitting in the back of a ute lifting stuff, whilst getting driven around and banging on the roof when you see something you wanna buy...

Always have a grand in my pocket when i go, generally have enough for a carton and a packet of darbs at the end of the day....And, like you, tonnes of shit i dont need to try to find a spot for....

Cheers.

So where do you guys find out about the swap meets?

Always looking for bits.

Could we have a thread dedicated to these kinds of events?

cheers

Glenn

between the old boy and I we sold about $450 worth of stuff.

Mainly little things (its always the crap that you manage to sell, the things you think will be popular dont!)

Lots of people buy old hand tools, thats the weird one. even things that are no good.

The biggest frustration we had for the day was when we got there.

Little old arab/wog looking bloke came up our trailer, with his little wife in tow (both pretended not to speak english... but spoke it perfectly when needed), started going through everything before we had even gotten out of the cars!

Starts picking things up, throwing things around in the trailer etc etc.

Really rude and didnt listen when told to wait a second.

Bought 2 old garden tools from us @ $5 a pop (was very perturbed at paying that..)

(clearing out my granparents shed as we have sold the house, my grandma passed away last year)

Anyway, long story short, go for a walk to the loos later on.... heres old mate with his own stall... with the 2 garden tools for sale... $15 each! haha.

I went and offered him $2 and haggled like crazy with him just for fun on tonnes of his stuff...

Happy to say he left with the garden tools in his van at the end of the day.

I wasnt so much angry at him selling them for profit, hell, thats capitalism, but his attitude combined with that was just frustrating.

I love swap meets and it is one thing I really miss while I am overseas!

I got a nice LX SS Instrument cluster recently and my best  buy was a Michael Jordan Rookie basketball card for $50 - I went to the card dealer in Adealide and  he told be its worth at least $700!!

I always have a stall at the nambour swap meet every year, last saturday in july. Some years you sell $600 worth if stuff, other years nothing! I think it will be the latter this year, with the amount of money going around at the moment..

Did anyone see Graham (LX5008) there with his Extreme Blasting sign painted FB Panelvan?

Had a chat with him yesterday arvo and he got some panels for his van for a "just in case bingle" and he was happy with his buy plus he handed out heaps of business cards for Extreme Blasting.

I try to go to as many swaps as I can but usually find that most stuff is sold between stall holders on the Saturday and there is usually slim pickings on the main day Sunday :nopity:

My wife and I are the organisers for our annual Fathers Day Swap here in Cootamundra on Sunday September 1 (my birthday) and this will be the 22nd year our club has been holding this event.

We have 125 sites already booked and will probably end up having over 220 like we did last year.

Graham told me that the Gosford Swap is not run like ours, it is "first in first served for sites" were ours is a numbered sites system as we find that most stall holders want the same spot as last year or prefer a certain position site where they think that they will get more customers through.

I do get a bit frustrated on the Sunday as I am helping out with stall holders directing them to their sites and not being able to get a decent look for any goodies   :furious:

Good ol' evilbay has thinned out the pickings especially for Torana bits but sometimes you can get lucky and besides that, it is a great social event AND a top place to pick up some leads on Torana stuff.

Barry

We only attended Nambour for the first time 2 years back, but it's definately on the "must do" list these days.

Maybe you've releived me of some cash up there in the past

Pomona swap in the U S, now that's a beast. Wandered around that sucker for about seven hours and still didn't see everything.

I used to go "The Bendigo swap meet" many years ago, usually come home with a different load of scrap, one of the last times I went I took a trailer load of old stationary engines, and I can relate to the rummaging through ya trailer before ya even get set up comment, they even hop on while ya still moving there.
Anyway this time I had an old International Harvester type M engine on board that been through a bush fire, only thing not melted was the cast iron, now this guy asked me what I wanted for it,I said make me an offer he scratched his bum and said I'll come see you later,he come back about 5 times over the week end,and another mate looked at and wanted the wheels,I said make an offer $25 was churched up ,it's yours.
So I wrote sold for $25 you missed out, when the other bloke come back he was rampant that I sold it,I said we'll you wouldn't make an offer
