Question came up on the FBEK forum about the European origins of the Aussie marketed Opel 4spd, and whether it was based on the 4 or 6 cylinder version of the European box. Apparently there were two different versions in Europe.

It’s a Phillipines made box if I remember right, might be Opel in origin like the 6cyl engines in South Africa were Chevrolet design but made in South Africa.

They would have been in HB? In HR they had the tin cover, then upgraded in LC to the cast cover version I am told.0071260be5dbb0a91b7acd2253a8dfef.png

Exact same OPEL 4spd as used in the 1967 OPEL Kadett - B Coupe F Rallye 1.9L 4cyl, 1967 OPEL Commodore  2.5L 6cyl and 1968 OPEL GT A-L 1.9L 4cyl

If they are referring to gear ratio sets as different versions then there were 3 differing ratio variants of the same gearbox in the OPEL GT 1900

The original ratio set the same as used in the LC GTR and GTR XU1.

Two alternative ratios sets homologated in November 1969.

I may be incorrect however, I believe the above 2.87:1 ratio 1st gear transmission was the alternative LC 3100X XU1 Transmission listed in the LC XU1 Parts Catalogue (prior to the GMH XU1 specific M20 4 spd released in the CK XU1)

That's interesting Paul, looking at many pics of the transmissions they look to be the same. However, I did notice the OPEL GT transmission has a switch (reverse?) mounted into the drivers side rear of the case.

The Aussie version has an expansion plug in that spot.

My mate on the FB EK forum is thinking of importing 20 gasket kits from Europe if there is any interest. He will sell them at cost to make the freight viable. Same kit as available locally at an exorbitant price.
