Hi all,

Tried searching but couldn't find anything, do the T56 Manuals need to have the Short Shifter Modification to clear tunnel etc, is pinion angle going to be better with the short shifter?

Thanks in advance.

A regular T56 like the type in a VZ Commodore will need the shifter in a more fwd position and a different rear bell housing.

Mine has a shortened rear bell housing that Mal Wood used to sell but I don't think exist anymore.

Even with the short rear bell housing on the T56 Magnums there isn't a lot of clearance at the rear to get a good angle without cutting into the support brace or lowering the K-frame to help with the angle.

If you are getting one pick your ratios, mine has standard Commodore ratios so 5th is 0.75 and 6th 0.5 would be much better with 0.86 and 0.75 or similar.

I fitted a T56 Magnum box to my SLR. The top shifter housing can be turned 180 degrees to give a forward or rearward stick position. It changes the position of the shifter by around 75mm. In the forward position the stick lines up perfectly in the centre of my original console. I'm running an injected 5L holden engine. The tailshaft  angle isn't perfect but I don't have vibrations. I'm still running the original upper and lower rear control arms and haven't modified the floor. Can't remember the OD ratio but is perfect for Hwy driving, 3.9-1 diff gears 17" 275x35 rear tyres.

Hey Tom,

Different rear bellhousing, that's interesting. Mine is out of a VY SS Crewman, so not really looking to muck around with the existing ratios. I remember with Dirtbag's Hatch he had to cut into the support brace which is fine.

Mal Wood does sell it, but for $2700... Easier to cut the tunnel.

Thanks gents.

Are you putting it on full rego? If so you might find the Engineering cost would well offset the savings in the rear housing.

Yes, that is definitely a possibility also. I guess I will cut the tunnel, mount engine/gearbox, see where it lands and then consult for advice again.
