I acquired this LC 4 door about 2 years ago and the plan was always to make it into a nice streetable sleeper while the ongoing LJ GTR 308 stroker project just kept getting bigger and better and therefore never seeing the road in 3.5 years.

It started out with a tired 186, 3 speed column shift manual and single spinner banjo and looked like this:

The interior was all stock too and in good condition so this is how it will stay. I'll just add a GTR instrument cluster and steering wheel.

Next I chased up a worked 202 with a yella terra head, straight cut timing gears, Crow 47/81 cam (biggest hydraulic available), electronic ignition. I also got a set of extractors and a full 2" exhaust system with Magnaflow muffler with the engine package. I put together a Celica 5 speed conversion from parts for which I already had most of and I just needed a speedo cable which I sourced from CRS and a crossmember off eBay. I also chased up a 390 Holley on a Redline 4bbl mani to go with the new worked motor and a 3.36 banjo LSD to replace the single spinner.

I gave the engine bay a quick coat of black paint while the engine was out then out the 202 and Celica 5 speed in:

Once the worked 6 cyl and 5 speed conversion was in the car and it was running, I decided it was too complete so it had to come back out again. I can't have a project car actually driveable and near finished so out came the 202 and 5 speed as I had plans to do a V8 conversion to the LC.

I then took the whole front end out and pulled it all apart, bead blasted every piece and painted it with black engine enamel and fitted all new ball joints and Noltec bushes. I also removed the steering column and cut down the steering shaft in preparation for the 2 x LH/LX steering knuckle conversion to make more clearance for the extractors.

As the front end was all rebuilt, I needed some larger brakes to pass engineering for the V8. I managed to get some LH SL/R 5000 complete stubs, discs, calipers, steering arms and brake hoses off Rory and gave them a quick bead blast and coat of paint to match the front end. I used them as they bolted straight up and still let me run standard 13" Torana rims that I always had planned to go with to keep with along with some chrome dress rims and hubcaps to keep with the sleeper theme. I also added some lowered springs and Monroe gas shocks I had lying around.

I had planned for a mild red 308 to go into the LC and to keep the Celica 5 speed and just add a V8 bellhousing to it and run a Hydraulic clutch setup to get rid of the messy rat trap gear. I chased up a hydraulic clutch setup and a V8 bellhousing off eBay. The hydraulic clutch gear came with a Toploader bellhousing and brass clutch plate so I sold that off and got a Dellow Celica to 308 bellhousing again off eBay. I cleaned up and repainted the Celica box ready for fitting. I also picked up a cheap mild 308 from an HJ with the intention of giving the heads a quick reco, ring and bearing the bottom end, add an LC/LJ higher capacity sump and throwing it straight into the LC.

After we pulled the 308 down, we found that it had a bit of a lip on the bores as it would have after many years of service and still being on standard bore! Another motor and box came up from a car I bought off a mate and wrecked that I wanted to use in my GTR so I decided to use the 357 and TH350 from it in the LC instead of the 308 and Celica 5 speed. I took the 357 stroker and TH350 out of my LJ GTR as I've got the COME 360 stroker from the car I wrecked getting built for it as I'm changing to VN heads, bigger solid cam, higher stall, etc. etc. with it so I wanted to use the better bottom end with it.

After deciding to go with the bigger power plant, I was a bit scared about keeping the LSD banjo up the back as I knew it would just get munched pretty quickly so I chased up a 9" housing and axles for it which had come out of an LJ. I had decided to change to a 4.11 LSD centre in my GTR which I had acquired along the way so I had a spare 3.50 LSD to go into the 9" I got for the LC. Its Torana stud pattern too so I can keep with the same rim combo as the front only widened out to 7" and run 225/60/13's on them which I scored off eBay ages ago because I knew they'd come in handy with this LC. Mr NOS helped out wit some Koni adjustable rear shocks to sort out the rear end and I also managed to get a CRS chassis kit off eBay as I was concerned about the car twisting under the power of the stroker. I already had some re-pro lower control arm reinforcement plates as per the XU-1's which were welded into the control arms when the front end was apart.

Thats where I'm at with it at the moment. I'm waiting for the chassis kit to arrive so I can fit it then I'll assemble and fit the 9" diff and finish off the steering conversion. The 357 stroker has just had the heads serviced and bigger, firmer springs fitted as I'm changing to from a H276 to a H286 Crane cam just to give it a bit more mid range and top end and a nicer idle. I also have a 3" mandrel bent exhaust ready to go on it too that I sourced off a V8 LJ.

As it was originally powered by a 138, it has 2250 badges and a GTR type fuel cap with a 2250 decal which I plan on keeping. The only things apart from standard that may give it away will be the widened rear rims and tyres, lowered stance and of course the larger exhaust tip and distinctive V8 note.

heh heh most ricer boys wont know anyway.

Hey al whats the deal with the Lh brake upgrade, they really bolt straight on no mods at all? Any threads that deal with it in detail?

Also how does this affect the way the wheel sits on the hub or does it place the rims in exactly the same position?

Well done on beating me for that chassis kit :0) I ordered mine from CRS the next day heh heh, $930 delivered with supra crossmember, reasonable price i guess.

Oh also can u fill me in on the hyd clutch setup, whats it out of etc etc?
Thanks, M.

The LH/LX upgrade im assuming is very similar to the UC one im doing on my LJ at the moment (should be put on tonight) it is very straightforward, just need to swap some bits from left to right and turn somethings upside down. i can explain it better later, with the photos ive got, but cant be #@$^%& doing it now.

doesnt effect the wheels at all, leaves them in the same spot pretty much.

to do the conversion you need stubs, third arms, disc caliper etc, and thats about it.

Certainly is a great little project, go little red rocket!! :spoton: But a sleeper? When the car is sittin at the lights, rumbling away with that note coming from the donk, I think it will be a bit of a give away :D

The LH/LX front brake upgrade is a straight swap. Left goes on left, right goes on right. No mods, no nothing, bolt up only. You just need all the bits LH/LX including steering arms, brake hoses, etc.

The hydraulic clutch set-up is a Dellow conversion. I'll be selling it if you are interested. It runs an HD/HR type master cylinder which is brand new. Its made for a 6 cyl so it will foul on the d/s head without mods. It really needs to sit on an upward angle like the hydraulic clutch set-ups go in the LH/LX's.

Yeah, you'd have to think back a while though. What was it 2-2.5 years ago when you bidded for it on eBay for me?
