LC/LJ brakes are better I reckon but an engineer won't pass them. LH V8 is the minimum requirement. I have complete HJ stubs, discs, iron calipers, etc. on my V8 GTR which work really well and are a straight bolt up application like these were but I wanted to stick with Torana stud pattern on the LC and be able to run 13" rims so I went for these LH ones. It depends on what stud pattern you want to run, etc. Apparently you can turn down some HQ discs to be the same diameter as LC/LJ ones and bolt them and the matching HQ calipers straight up to LC/LJ stub sxles. There is a small amount of clearance grinding that may need doing but it doesn't throw the steering out which happens with the use of HQ type stubs.

hmm - well it seems that xu1 disks are 'better than std' which is the requirements for brakes for a lc v8 here in QLD. with xu1 brakes - can i use the std calipers? or are xu1 disks too wide? are these easily sourced/expensive?

sorry to thread steal

There's little caliper spacers for the XU-1 disc clearance, Holdon.

XU-1 discs and calipers are the same as HK/HT/HG V8 ones. They are the same 6 cyl calipers but with a spacer in the middle to clear the same diameter but slightly thicker discs. I have heard of people getting knocked back by engineers in NSW for trying to run these brakes even though they pulled up the 327 and 350 SBC powered HK/HT/HG GTS Monaros and would have been standard fitment had the LJ XU-1 V8 gone ahead. I have a pair of these calipers and discs here too but I'm using them on my V8 HG ute. If you can get away with it, use the XU-1 / V8 HK/HT/HG type ones. You can get repro spacer plates, split your standard calipers and add them to the centre and get the thicker discs new.

Love the projects where you receive all the updates at once. Takes all the impatient waiting out of it :). Good stuff happening, will be great fun when finished.

Looks like an awesome project, the way things have gone so far, I won't be surprised if a big block goes in in a month or two....

I turned the column shift column into a blank column to get rid of the ugly gear shift knuckle and shift levers at the bottom. I just ground off the column shift knuckle on the one that was in my LC and filed it smooth in that area. I also took the whole thing apart and the two shift levers at the bottom I took out, ground the ends off and re-fitted them to the column so it all holds together properly again. It probably took me about an hour to pull the column out and modify it and saved me the cost of a blank column which is well over $100. I've seen people just take the column shift lever off and leave the knuckle and shifting levers at the bottom which looks crap. Its pretty easy to get rid of them. Now I just have to fill the small hole where the knuckle was, paint and refit it.

In WA the LJ standard brakes are fine; this is from an engineer.

I've modified the steering shaft to clear the V8 extractors and moved over and refitted the steering column.

With a new LJ 2 door on its way and the decision to return my V8 GTR back to original, this build will be completed and the car offered for sale in one of many forms I've not yet decided on. See the final build options here.
