You have an odd pair of heads!  Only one of them is an early head. The driver side is a HQ-HJ but the passenger is HT-HG!

 

Your red VP SS reminds me of the $1000 special I used as a donor car for the engine that went into my Overlander. It was identical to yours but white. I cut a lot of the mounts for the fuse box and cruise control out of its engine bay and it was scrapped. Shame how many were scrapped for their drivelines. There was a complete black manual one rusting away near me until a year or two ago, I tried to buy it but last I saw it there was rust holes around the rear screen.

I can totally understand why the heads are different as the engine was built specifically for a Torana 15 to 20+ years ago.

The engine was originally built by M.R. Automotive many many years ago which I did contact them regarding the 308 although they couldn’t give me much info as I didn’t have a previous invoice or rego number... Anyway the engine has had some time spent on it with the heads ported quite well, big valves, the valley de burred, oil galleries opened up, Chev pistons and running a decent Cam, 10.5:1 Compression.

I dropped in to see Steve from B & R Brakes at Castle Hill to buy some tube nuts, he’s a wealth of knowledge and he gave me some great tips on seating the flare.
I purchased some tube benders, flaring tool as well as some 3/16 bundy tube and made my front brake lines... Pretty happy with it.

When I restored my hatch in the early 2000s I reused the Dellows clutch master cylinder assembly as you also have. After years of heavy clutch pedal pushing, a bugger to top fluid without spilling brake fluid on the paint work, low take position from the floor and big piss off was every time I wanted to check and set tappets I had to unbolt the master cylinder to gain enough room to get the drivers side rocker cover off. The heavy spring pressure plate to handle the torque just don't like that system. I ended up making my own system using a Ford BA falcon clutch pedal assembly and modified it to suit the Torana. Very easy to do and install, I can now push the pedal to the floor with one finger. Much better feel with a take up point at mid travel. One of the best mods I have done to the hatch and a real pleasure to drive a manual again. I didn't even blink an eye lid and did the same conversion to my SLR. Also frees up lots of room in the engine bay, looks so much neater, you can only see the remote reservoir under the bonnet.

The motors cast date has is E249 @ 8 o’clock
This engine didn’t have any of the original parts… manifold, water pump or timing chain cover-so no it didn’t have a timing chain tensioner.
