Hi Tom,

The seats are a marketplace find and came with torana rails. They are autotechnica seats.

The backrest is a little narrow for me. but other than that they do the job.

To be honest, I'll probably just bite the bullet and go a hoppers kit.

Realistically though, I need to get ahead again and get a bit of money saved before doing much else with it.

I want to get the handbrake cables done though so I can at least drive it here and there.

The only other issue is that I'm not sure if it's running hot or not. I purchased a 304 sender and once warm its off the gauge, change to a 6 cylinder UC sender and its off the gauge once warm too.

So not really sure if it's actually running hot or not.

Do you have a 0V wire from the battery to the body?

Don't worry about the missing engine number. It is how you bought it and that is that. They will issue you with a new one. It makes it easy to convince them that it is a 78/79 block.

Yel, the 0 volt wire is there.

EDK, mernda is about an hour from me, so probably not at this stage. especially when I'm not sure if the car is running hot.

Shiney, I'll look into what needs to happen.

Well, I've done a little more driving in it and took it for a longer drive today. temp stayed steady, so it seems like a typical holden. If it sits idle too long it gets hot.

either that or the gauge has settled and is working correctly now.

Still leaning towards selling it as that would give me a 12 month headstart on buying a house.

I guess it depends on how the next few months go.

It's currently on laid up insurance and I'm considering switching to 3rd party so at least I'm covered if the worst happens. With 3rd party if I hit someone they generally won't even look at my car. Just makes me really nervous if something was to happen and the car isn't engineered.

I doubt the premiums would be much more expensive. Maybe even cheaper??

Well, I had this listed for sale forward few months without any genuine interest. I figured 25k was pretty fair considering a lot on the market for 15k still need a lot of work done to them.

Anyway, the add has been pulled now, and it looks like I'm stuck with it, haha.

I've driven it a fair bit recently on some slightly longer trips ( an hour round trip) without much issue. Probably a bit stupid without the temperature gauge and oil pressure sender not working but oh well.

Few little things need to be done still like Handbrake cables, a couple of small leaks etc.

Engineering can wait until I can afford it.

The only thing I've spent on it recently is fuel, rego and insurance.

I did pick up a set of 14's today as well for really cheap so they may end up on it at some stage.

Hi Steve

Be aware that if you fit 14inch rims, your speedo will probably read low.

When i went to 15 inch, I had to change both the drive gear in the extension housing and the speedo cable gear.

Thanks, it turns out the seller was wrong, they're ford pattern. It was worth the gamble at $100.

As for the speedo, it's already out by 10 to 15

I've got a set of those in Torana pattern. If you were closer I'd say come and get them.

They'll be HK-HG. I have a few odd ones around too, not a matching set though.

Still really wrestling with whether or not I keep the car, I need a new every day car and I want to buy a house or unit in the next few years.

Such a hard decision to make.

I've even thought about trying to swap it for a more modern car to use as a daily like a VE or VF SS or XR6 turbo.

I know either way I'll regret the decision I make. Either way at least I'll be able to work on Dads with him and drive his when its done.

I wouldn't buy a VE or VF SS in Melbourne. Insurance will cost a bomb as its almost guaranteed to be stolen from you, unless you plan to keep a pet brown snake in it. You are probably better off buying a V6 Statesman, less likely to be pinched and cheap as chips.

This is officially for sale, asking 20k firm if anyone is interested.

Sadly changing priorities in like means it has to go, if it doesn't sell I'll probably let the rego lapse and wreck it out.

And you were doing so well on a limited budget Steve.  I can see where you are coming from though. Sometimes priorities don't come in the order we would like them to.

Thanks guys, this isn't out of frustration with the car like last time. I've actually been driving it a lot lately.

The thing is i have some debt, nothing crazy. I also want to save for a house. I'm 32 now and figure with zero savings and a debt to pay off it sets me back a year before I can save if I don't sell whereas if I do, I come out with a bit of cash in the bank.

To top it off my every day car died, which thatcher I was in some debt for. I'm borrowing my dads spare car, which also needs repairs.

I make good money, but being a single parent and renting on my own makes it hard to save.

I could also be a lot more responsible with my spending.

At the end of the day between the loan, rego and insurance I'll be freeing up $600+ a month.

Sounds like a smart move mate.  Good  luck with the sale.

You can always  buy another car  later on.

Buying a house is a good thing financially and future wise. The smart thing to do is buy the worst house in the best area. But the issue with that, especially for someone with good mechanical/fabrication skills like yourself, is there is always heaps of work to do on an old house and it is hard to pay good $ for someone else to do what you can do yourself. On top of that (speaking from experience) trying to work on houses after having worked on car bodies, painting etc is you always aim for perfection in cut length, finish, painting etc. In reality house framing, plaster finishing and painting are only required to be finished to what would be called "rough as guts" on a car. Probably the only place that really requires precision is bricklaying and tiling - both of which you will excel at having done panel and gap work yourself.

If you do buy an old house, make sure you invest in (unless you already have them), again from experience. Lots of this sort of stuff comes up cheap on Marketplace:

Quality drill and Tek skins and batteries.

Battery circular saw.

Drop saw that can do multi-angle and complex angles (240V ones are cheap used as most trades going to battery).

Nail gun (air will be good enough for house repair).

Saw horses.

Good step ladder, and maybe a platform ladder or alloy scaff up to 1.2-1.5m.

Manual plumbing crimper with at least 1/2" and 3/4" dies. These are a godsend when making plumbing repairs. Also little copper 1/2" and 3/4" cutting tools and a little copper pipe de-burring tool.

A few plaster application tools (you probably already have some of these for vehicle filler).

Paint trays and rollers.

Large hole saws for 90mm, 100mm plumbing and downlights.

Plasterboard saw.

300-400mm and 1200mm spirit levels.

Whatever you do don't try and do electrical yourself. If you have an eleco mate labour for him/her. You will be able to run cables, hammer in mounting plates etc etc as an electrical labourer, just leave the connections and mandatory testing to the tradesperson.

The other advice I'd give you is if you buy a place and do drainage and stormwater, DON'T run 90mm. Use at least 100mm, maybe 150mm. 90mm blocks just looking at it. And tiling sucks and it is hard. The bigger the tiles the harder it is. After just completing 3 x bathrooms at home with a tiler, to do it properly it is the single most complicated task in a house. You actually have to design the ceiling height, where the shower angles go etc etc around the tile sizes so they work and joints end up in doorways, full tiles in the right paces and no silly little impossible cuts.

I would add an SDS hammer drill with a wide spade bit to that list for removing old tiles / glue / lino. It doesn't have to be a good (expensive) one, and you will have it forever. The drill bits are getting cheaper too, so if you ever need to drill an inch hole through a brick wall to run a pipe through you will be covered.  I also second Yel on the 150mm DWV pipe.

If they are definitely Ford pattern, ill buy them off you mate, they would look great on my van. I'm in Sydney but I could definitely arrange freight/or even a road trip!
