Just say that documentation was accepted and going by their calculations above that means you can put a 308 into the lc-lj torana, but isn’t it x4 if they are going by 1054kg…. If I used the revised doco 1096 take off the 47.77kg that makes it 1049 kg x 4 = 4196 .so you can’t even put a 253 in.

I have seen lc-lj toranas getting registered in the mainland ,melb, syd.with the 308 installed in the last few years so I wonder what rules do both these states follow.i always thought they use ncop vsb 14 rules.are the engineers actually passing these without consulting transport or do they not need to do that in those states..
I actually ask the transport this : he doesn’t specify the weight or say anything about the 308 into the torana but going by what he says it’s not allowed here in tas.
what i said
Hi.i want to use highly regarded Victorian vass engineers and fabricator to certify my lj torana for tasmanian roads to fabricate and profile new rear chassis rails into my lj 4 dr,new prefabricated 9’ housing ,new rear inner mudguards ,flooring, brakes etc .and will b tested on flex with an torsion and beam test ,lane change test .engine will b a holden std 308 with a an mal wood tkx 5 speed.what I would like to know is what rules do they have to follow for tas roads.
Here’s a small vid of the same fabrication that will b done to my lj torana.

The reply
Hello Jason,
Where the vehicle is Tasmanian registered the modifications will require certification by an Approved Vehicle Certifier (AVC). A list of AVCs can be viewed on the Transport Services website at https://www.transpor...pections_avcais
If the vehicle is registered in another jurisdiction, certified in that jurisdiction and has an appropriate modification plate affixed to the vehicle, the modifications may be mutually recognised. However, this is dependant on the modifications complying with all relevant vehicle standards applicable to Tasmania including the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification, known as Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 (VSB 14), and there are no jurisdiction specific modification codes or specifications applied to the certifications.
I noted the video identifies the vehicle incorporating modified rear wheel tubs, please note there are specifications around wheels, tyres and wheel track in VSB 14 that will apply.
A copy of VSB 14 can be viewed online at https://www.infrastr.../bulletins/ncop
I trust this has been of assistance, however if you have any further enquiries I can be contacted on 6166 3263 or email at vehicle.standards@stategrowth.tas.gov.au

Well it’s looks like we have exhausted all our avenues to have an 304 or Ls engine into an lc lj torana in tas.
the good ol tas gov has legislated vsb-14 ,so no exemptions on capacity table or conditions like vic.
im devoed…..frOcking Tasmania.

LJ XU1 is:
2298lb shipping (no fuel or water) = 1042.4kg.
2440lb Curb (all fluids) = 1106.8kg.
Take off the 67.28L of fuel from GMH's published Curb weight (47.77kg) gives you 1059.03.
Multiply that by 4 = 4236cc. A 253/4.2 is 4.142L. Which would also work for an LC.

Yeah I reckon I’d get away with the 253 Yel .the engineer I asked pretty much knew it is 1096 kg tare weight.didn’t specify which but that is the weight he uses.pretty much the weight of the lc xu-1 when it was revised.like what you mentioned on previous page.
what’s the go with one with police number.i have a mal wood bellhousing and hydraulic slave cylinder for males 5 spd box .got to go the 4.2 so I can use the gear I have bought.

Have a think about it!

I was thinking about your 4.2 in LC/LJ. They don't take much to be made quick. Look at the HQ SS for example, all it had was a stock 253 with dual exhaust and a 3.36 rear axle rather than 3.08. It was basically a dead heat match with a 308 manual GTS which had single exhaust and the same 3.36 rear axle.
The good thing about a 4.2 is they don't ever seem to have the same thin bore issues as a 308/5.0. So they are happy at 60 thou up. Which gives you about 261ci. They don't need expensive head modifications, standard heads are fine. All you have to do is balance it, get a cam to suit the driveline and car and use a 4BBL intake and Quadrajet with HEI distributor. See if you can still but lumpy top pistons (like HX-VB had) so you get a static compression around 9.5:1.
If you did a bit of bore thickness testing, you could build a stroker out of it. The one I have read about used stock 305 Chevy pistons (same stroke as a 350) with an offset ground 253 or 308 crankshaft using small journal SBC rods. You have to deck the block a bit as 305/350 pistons sit down the bore a bit. The 305 has 3.736" bore which is about 0.111" overbore but supposedly its OK in a 253/4.2. With a 3.25" stroke that gives you around 285ci, maybe a bit more if you use a standard crank and get a bit more stroke out of it.
Good watch here too:
