I've scrapped all the deadener off the inside of the guards, tapped them up, and started fitting the left one.
I used a piece of timber quad to line up the rib and worked from there.
I had to "move" too many folds to make it work but it got there.

So after cracking the shits with this (I feel you pain Marty) I thought I'd pull the calipers apart to see if they needed pistons
Yep, no worries, compressed air, pop the pistons out? ![]()
Not ![]()
This car has been idle for 16ish years?
The residual brake fluid had turned into crud, clag, varnish, poo...……….call it what you like but the pistons wouldn't be moved.
I even tried pushing them back in and soaking them in brake clean. ![]()
So.…………...The RoDoMotive (I don't throw anything out) Caliper piston wedge-o-matic piston puller was developed.
First I tried a slide puller, shaped washer which was cocked in the piston bore.
This was working but it destroyed the thread on the end of the puller...………… ![]()
Proto-type II was successful!
It was a wedge, basically, that gripped the inside of the piston which enabled it to be pulled out.
The sleeve that fitted inside the piston was an inner wheel bearing that I had removed. You'll see the crack.
The top and bottom washers are Holden rear upper shocker mound washers ground to the task.
The washers spread the bearing and grip the inside of the piston.
The bolt is 3/8 UNF with ample pulling power.
The spacer is made from an old tail shaft.

Hi Rob, Getting there mate I'll try that quad idea when I get back onto the front end of mine. Those Rares lower guard repairs are super frustrating.
Thanks again for the you-know what. I'm getting more enjoyment out of fixing the rear-end rather than the front.
Marty

Thanks Marty, I still haven't finished the guard pictured above...………….getting close now though.
3 piece repair cos I'm a tight arse. ![]()

Front is almost tacked on. Every second spot weld at the moment as my argon is getting low and I'm not allowed to travel. ![]()
Calipers done. I cant find in 2 manuals what the tension for the 4 bolts that hold them together are?
One manual virtually said "you're a dickhead, we know more than you, you will never be enough qualified to touch this component" ![]()
Also the steering column has had the RoDoMo lower bearing mod. All switches (ignition and indicator) dismantled contacts cleaned, lubed and reassembled.
I got no keys with the car but while banging around a magnetic "key safe" fell out of somewhere...……..search back in this thread...……………..I can't remember? ![]()
It turns out that my first road car (EH) door key fitted the ignition lock with a bit of a mod. ![]()
The previous owner had butchered the Ignition and boot locks as he never had keys either.

Hi Rob, I did my caliper bolts to 70ft lb. That was the tension at which the bolts cracked when undoing them so that's what I did them back up to.
Posted 01 October 2020 - 11:47 PM
I checked other bolt tensions with the same thread and 35 Ft Lb was the maximum? Rotor to hub for example.
Starting friction is more than moving friction when tensioning bolts.
