Some things just never seem to get there but after alot of time, hard work & patience another lc gtr - rally red - will live to see the bitumen again :spoton:

You may have seen some of the pics from way back of when i first brought it home if not im added them again.

Ive taken about 200 pics of every rust repair panel replacement, basically everything i did has been captured.

Just out of interest, what do you set your mig to for panel work? I've been using medium, 2 & wire feed 2.5.

Wow, nice super clean welds. The floorpan & trans tunnel look superb. Very straight as well. Should come up a treat!

You're not kidding! I wish my welds were a 1/4 as good as yours.

thanks guys, its nice to get some praise for your efforts

I'll check my mig setting and get back to you as its been a few months since i last used the mig. The problem i find with most migs is that the settings vary from machine to machine.

The floor plans were my first offcial welds on the car after laying some light welds on similar guage sheet. Bit of overkill on those because what you see in those pics i did the same on the overlap underneath then still seam sealed both sides.

You might notice the panel repair to the drivers side of tunnel, not quite sure what happened to the car previously but that panel was cut out, possible to access the gearbox linkages, then replaced with gal so i used my donor car to put the right piece back in.

This is the only shot i can find of the tunnel before i replaced that part.

Brilliant work Kev :spoton:
Good to see you are using the best school of thought..."Do it right, do it once".
A bit longer in the resto will convert to a lot longer enjoying the car when it's finished.
Keep posting pics.

Cheers,
jpxu1 :D

here's a few shots of the boot, as you all know they rust on the pass side so i cut out the panel and made up a pressing tool to reshape the original floor pattern

The next lot of shots are of when i fitted the drivers quarter, i mig welded then lead wiped the turret to roof. First time at it, i was rapt at how easy it is to do.

PS, it is now rally red today. I set my garage up as a booth so i cant get back far enough for good shots so i'll post some this week.

pressing tool? how did you do that? I belted up a peice with a hammer and welded it in the same spot, looks like a dogs breakfast compared to your repair. plus mine has a lot of filler to correct the grove shape

Ihe tool i made was pretty rough, basically its a male and female die of that shape.
I could only press one groove at a time so i marked out 2 pieces of sheet and got it fairly close to original. Then i joined the 2 pieces and matched the up to the existing grooves and mig welded then back in place, I used alittle filler to tidy up the weld joins then topped it off with the seam seealer.

yella slur - The lass in the pic is my youngest daughter (10) 1 of 3. They always ask is "is it ready yet?"

jbird - Your right it is rally red but after looking at for 4 hours it looked orange until i put orange up against and it looked red

The last time i sprayed a car was about 1989, that was a mock lj xu1. I painted it in bmw beige bronze metallic but thought the colour looked like silver frost so before i laid the clear on i cut it back and painted it in lono ranger, loked a million bucks.

ok, painted all the blackouts and stripe in the last week.

Its been about 2 weeks since the top coat was fininshed si its time for it to sit and i'll cut n clear n cut n buff in a month.

If anyone has an lc gtr out there without stripes and not confident in getting them right dont panick as this was my 1st try at it. If anyone wants the tips i can go through the process when i get back from my hols next month.

Id definitely tell anyone to paint rather then go for vinyl.
